9th Grade Stewardship

9th graders are expected to engage in a stewardship placement and/or project. The philosophy behind this program is that, before stepping outside of the Pingree community to serve others, we must first become aware of the needs of our own community, and find ways to serve each other and the school. The stewardship program seeks to build a foundation for civic engagement and service.

Pingree faculty and staff supervise these placements. These opportunities may engage 9th graders in a semester-long commitment (being part of the Tech Team), a short-term assignment (serving as school ambassadors for exchange students), or a one-time project (designing and creating a bulletin board about student health). No matter what the placement, students will become "experts" in their assigned area, and will learn to assess the needs of the community and respond in kind.

Semester I, Fall 2015.
You have the option of remaining in your current stewardship assignment. The only groups that cannot renew are Biology technicians, blogging, and learning commons).

_____ School store (Supervisor: Ms. Lawton)
·       Operation of the school store relies entirely on student volunteers. Stewards will help with sales, stocking, and special events, as well model items for photographs for marketing purposes. Students will also have a say in ordering items!

_____ Athletic department (Supervisor: Mr. McCoy)
·       Athletic department stewards will help assemble the athletic records of the past years. They will use their detective skills to track down missing information by looking through vintage newsletters, bulletins, and photographs. Students will gain an inside perspective on how the athletic department works and how it has grown over the past 50 years.

_____ Admissions (Supervisor: Mrs. Dyer)
·      As most 9th graders remember, it is very important to feel welcomed into the Pingree community. Admissions Department stewards will help with mailings, train for tours, and collect feedback on the admissions process from their peers. Students will come to understand not only the admission process but also learn a great deal about Pingree and all of the aspects of the community.

_____ Green Team (Supervisor: Ms. O'Neill)
·      Green Team stewards will promote and improve environmental stewardship and strengthen our community by collaboration in sustainability practices. Duties include bringing designated recycling bins to master bins, and participating in monthly meetings with the entire Green Team, which includes students from grades 10, 11, and 12 as well.

·      These stewards will design and  create informational bulletin boards and posters for the Health Office. Stewards will select a health-related topic, research the topic, and create a beautiful final product that will educate the community.

_____ Tech Team (Supervisors: Mr. Medvitz and Mrs. Conrad)
·       Join the Tech Team to work with the Technology Department troubleshooting with computers, supporting the X:1 program, making tutorial videos, and piloting new tech initiatives!

_____ Advancement Office (Supervisors: Ms. Mathey and Mrs. Maggio)
·       Stewards will help with event planning essentials, as well as with event preparation and set-up. They will help with mailings, the Pingree auction, organizing event books - and they will help a very busy staff keep their sanity!

_____ Service Stewards (Supervisor: Ms. McCoy)
·       Assist with the many service projects and events occurring at Pingree (such as the Special Olympics, holiday gift drive, and winter food drive). This may involve being ambassadors of different projects, creating posters, organizing donated materials, and more!

_____ Write for a Change (Supervisor: Mrs. Grenier)
·      Stewards in Writing for a Change will research and identify groups and non-profit organizations that work toward social justice. Based on student interest, they will work and write about change needed surrounding justice in race, gender, class, community and environment.

_____ Lab assistants (Supervisors: Ms. Karch and Mr. Hamilton)
·       Lab assistants work behind-the-scenes in the chemistry and biology labs. They learn names and uses of lab equipment, proper cleaning and handling techniques, and gain some experience making basic measurements when preparing solutions and/or doing test runs of new labs. Perfect for young scientists!

_____ Art Gallery (Supervisor: Deb VanderMolen)
