Pursuit Team visits The Open Door in Gloucester

On Friday, September 19th, Pingree's Pursuit Team visited The Open Door as part of an ongoing service project. The Open Door, located in Gloucester, serves five nutritious meals a week to anyone in need of food or companionship. In addition, they operate a food pantry, Mobile Market, and grow much of their own produce.

Led by coaches Sarah Carpenter and Kerri McKie, the Pingree Pursuit team divided into three groups - kitchen, food pantry, and garden. The gardeners harvested bags of green beans, cucumbers, and red peppers as well as learned about the role that Food Corps (a division of Americorps) plays in alleviating hunger in the United States.

In the food pantry, students separated and bagged frozen fish sticks (donated by Gloucester company Gorton's Seafood), and in the kitchen students peeled, chopped, and roasted root vegetables. The aromas were fantastic!

We are grateful to our energetic hosts at the Open Door and look forward to returning for at least two more visits.
